Good-bye

Chris finishes repairs on my front gate,  which I had just painted.   I thank him.   

He says,  "Do not say "Thank you" so much.   We don't do that in Croatia."

"Oh," I say,  "like in Klingon.  No word for Please or Thank you."

"Yes," he says, "or for good-bye."

And he leaves.

reminds me of what the Shaolin priest supposedly said . . . " a thank you cheapens the gift."
