Backcountry in the Spring

Eliot, Kyra, Shiah and Leah all snowmobile into the Cascades backcountry, then take off on "split-board" snow boards up the mountain. Last trip of the season? the snow is disappearing fast.

Sam Green, Washington Poet

Flippin' the dial and Julia says, "Stop! that's Sam!" and I'll be damned if it wasn't altho' I hadn't recognized him, looking good in jacket and tie, reading his poems to an Olympia audience at a luncheon, it seemed. Amazing dissonance between the poems and the setting! Amazing where talent, passion, unflagging focus can take a man.

Unquiet Dreams

Water runs deep beneath my bed.
Something has happened here.
Native Americans are restless.
The blind man scents me, the
deaf man will not turn his back.
There are so many turnings.
There are flashes at the corner of my vision.
Something yet may come of this.
Something good . . .
Who knows?
