Cute and Goofy History

Ha!  Sam Green found an old photo of me in
second grade at the Old Fildalgo school on March's Point.
That was the year I lived with my grandparents.
I don't remember the school there at all.

'From 1917 until 1954, Fidalgo School was a
four room eight grade school. Each teacher
taught two grades in one classroom.

Around 1954 the school building was remodeled
with a basement added. The school then went
to a program of six grades and six classrooms.
The school closed to make room for the Texaco Refinery in 1957.'

Hiked 4 1/2 hours, over 11 km (long story, some stupid choices) , to point near Milna. Nicely, I could get to the sea there. I was surprised to find some old ruins. I knew they were older than WW2 by their construction but I didn't know how old or what they were. Doing some research I discovered they were an artillery fort built by Napoleon in 1806 trying to defend the island against the Russians. He failed in a large naval battle and Brač welcomed the Russians. In fact Milna for 1-year became the capital city of the island under the Russians. The ruins were overgrown but very cool. Of course following Eliots advice I looked in all the stone wall cracks but found nothing. I needed him here!

Arrival, Unexpected Weather

Old Perun farts,
stomach grumbles,
golden mustachios flash,
tears leap from his eyes as he
laughs at his own cleverness.

Hey, John, old friend, long time!
Dobro dosli!!!

Hahahahaha!

Tin at Two

Tin at two,
Noisy Fjaka,
Billiards, football on TV, late night lingerers
Jugo moaning deeply between the boats and down stone streets,
Whistling abruptly through the masts, Puddles on the Riva where
Perun welcomed me back with stomach rumbling, and golden mustachios flashing.

Tin, us two, travarica at Vox.
What is this singing?
Pennants in the winds,
Solidarity, friend!
Observe without judgement!
Smoke that cigar butt.
Finish that drink.

Go home to bed.

And

"After his wife divorced him, Joe asked his best friend, Bill, to fix him up with a blind date. Bill obliged. The next day Joe called up Bill and shouted at him angrily: "Bill, what kind of a guy do you think I am. That girl you fixed me up with was cross-eyed; she was almost bald; her nose was long, thin and crooked; she had hair growing on her face; she was flat chested; and her ankles were as thick as her thighs".
Bill answered: "Either you like Picasso, or you don't like Picasso."

Found

A wealthy man commissioned Pablo Picasso to paint a portrait of his wife. Startled by the non-representational image on the final canvas, the woman's husband complained, "It isn't how she really looks." When asked by the painter how she really looked, the man produced a photograph from his wallet. Returning the photography Pablo observed, "Small, isn't she?"

After Six months of Sun....

Rain and thunderstorms finally hit Milna.

Slavko writes:

"Last night it started, first signs were thunderbolts from the west, than downpour, and ever since it is soaking, slowly, constantly... what a refreshment!

A little anecdote: my grandfather in fifties went to the field to check on the crops after the great drought. It looked sad. Clear sky with just a tiny little cloud on the horizon. Enraged he cursed at it: "what are you doing here, did they send you to scout if there is anything left alive!"

Munich Vacation

In January, our good friends Almir and Dragana of Sarajevo vacationed in
Munich for 12 days. Besides spending time with her son and his wife,
they made Almir very, very happy by snagging tickets to Wishbone Ash,
Almir's favorite band since 1972! One of the last times I have visited
Almir, we sat in the Manhattan Bar in Sarajevo drinking beer and
watching Wishbone Ash concert videos.
