and so Sam do you remember a night so many years ago when tim & john & i rode over to your house on the eastside with our heads in a collective cloud after stopping at the bar beforehand and somehow we managed to stumble through your house and out onto the patio where we had more drinks and spoke of tolstoy and rilke and surealism and made statements that we were artists and your wife became uncomfortable because we were getting loud and john knew better but tim and i kept laughing and smoking and you told a story about how you nearly burned the house down murdering bugs in a nearby tree with a torch and we laughed and thought how foolish could you be and i didn't think you were a poet and i thought your were maybe an english teacher who would go mad over moby dick and torture students with paper after paper to write when they would rather be with a girl and i said i was an artist and a poet and i did like your line about an amputee who could feel his lost arm like a phone that kept ringing and ringing and no one would answer and your wife said we really had to leave because we woke the baby and we left with a laugh and drove off across the bridge into the night. Now you are the POET and I am still driving across a bridge into the night. Congratulations!
Your new best fan.
sam, i am surprised you haven't commented yet on my comment on your commencement as poet laureate which was commented upon by the press and since you were named by the governor as a poet of awareness i thought you might be aware of my comment and my appreciation of your commencement.
Am I utterly wrong or have you not commenced to comment. Please announce your intentions to comment or not to comment.
Interesting to know.
