Arrival, Unexpected Weather

Old Perun farts,
stomach grumbles,
golden mustachios flash,
tears leap from his eyes as he
laughs at his own cleverness.

Hey, John, old friend, long time!
Dobro dosli!!!

Hahahahaha!

Tin at Two

Tin at two,
Noisy Fjaka,
Billiards, football on TV, late night lingerers
Jugo moaning deeply between the boats and down stone streets,
Whistling abruptly through the masts, Puddles on the Riva where
Perun welcomed me back with stomach rumbling, and golden mustachios flashing.

Tin, us two, travarica at Vox.
What is this singing?
Pennants in the winds,
Solidarity, friend!
Observe without judgement!
Smoke that cigar butt.
Finish that drink.

Go home to bed.

And

"After his wife divorced him, Joe asked his best friend, Bill, to fix him up with a blind date. Bill obliged. The next day Joe called up Bill and shouted at him angrily: "Bill, what kind of a guy do you think I am. That girl you fixed me up with was cross-eyed; she was almost bald; her nose was long, thin and crooked; she had hair growing on her face; she was flat chested; and her ankles were as thick as her thighs".
Bill answered: "Either you like Picasso, or you don't like Picasso."

Found

A wealthy man commissioned Pablo Picasso to paint a portrait of his wife. Startled by the non-representational image on the final canvas, the woman's husband complained, "It isn't how she really looks." When asked by the painter how she really looked, the man produced a photograph from his wallet. Returning the photography Pablo observed, "Small, isn't she?"

After Six months of Sun....

Rain and thunderstorms finally hit Milna.

Slavko writes:

"Last night it started, first signs were thunderbolts from the west, than downpour, and ever since it is soaking, slowly, constantly... what a refreshment!

A little anecdote: my grandfather in fifties went to the field to check on the crops after the great drought. It looked sad. Clear sky with just a tiny little cloud on the horizon. Enraged he cursed at it: "what are you doing here, did they send you to scout if there is anything left alive!"

Munich Vacation

In January, our good friends Almir and Dragana of Sarajevo vacationed in
Munich for 12 days. Besides spending time with her son and his wife,
they made Almir very, very happy by snagging tickets to Wishbone Ash,
Almir's favorite band since 1972! One of the last times I have visited
Almir, we sat in the Manhattan Bar in Sarajevo drinking beer and
watching Wishbone Ash concert videos.

Saturday interlude

Head down the highway into the Sonoran Desert. Make certain you are a minimum of 40 miles from the nearest human, then turn south on a dirt road and roll across a black pebbly plain for another 10 miles. Find a small Palm oasis tucked neatly into a pocket of bare hills, ancient gathering place for several desert tribes. Find granite boulders with their brown desert veneer covered with hundreds of petroglyphs. Make camp. Watch the moonrise over the stillness.

Thursday at Village Site

Wandering around an ancient village site a couple of miles in, I notice the cholla have hitched a ride on my boot. Stuck right through the leather and rubber. Tough to pry off. Spines just won't come out! A couple of coyote pups are having a bad time somewhere across the desert. I follow a wash down from the village and find more pottery shards. Heading out, I spook a desert bighorn on a hillside.

Finally, Tuesday

Finally, after five days of coughing, fever, phelgm, rain, winds, and driving, driving, driving, dodging countless truck and trailer rigs on narrow, nightmarish highways at dusk and dark, in a daze of fatigue and medicine, with only a nights respite at a dreamtime Chumash pictograph site, I cross summit after summit and drop down deserts, through Joshua Tree from the Mojave to the Sonoran, wind my way through the mud canyons of the San Andreas fault, skirt the lemon and orange groves, the date palms, bounce across the Anza Borrego Badlands through an immense storm of blowing dust, endure a night of wind threatening my flimsy tent, and emerge t-shirted into sunlight and warmth, among friends -- ocatilla, barrel, agave, mesquite -- with tiny fishhook cactus in bloom, hillsides crazy with jumbled stone, and Kumeyaay pottery shards big as my heart on the desert floor.
